Keeping an Eye on My Purple Martin Neighbors

June 3rd, 2009 by admin

Still Watching the Martin’s

I have been watching for them all week. Sometimes their house looks very empty, with no signs of life anywhere around it. Other times there is a great deal of flitting and darting about. Occasionally, there are little heads sticking out of the holes with a guard standing by.

A couple a days last week we had very high winds. Waves crashing on the shore, dark, cold, dismal days. If they were there, they stayed inside. Only the big birds; sea gulls and crows were out catching rides on the wind currents.

Sunday morning I looked out and there was a starling standing on their roof. I thought that would be the end of the Martin occupancy.

Monday morning was bright, sunny and warm. I was working out in my garden and I heard twittering. Authentic twittering! I looked over and was pleased to see two little heads poking out and a guard on duty. There were others flying about as well, so I hope they are there to stay. Guess I will have to keep watching. Wish I could be a guard too to protect them.

It’s almost like a song . . .

Waking up early in the bright morning to see the lake like a sheet of glimmering glass. All is silent except for a crow that waits, watching… wanting to catch a fish but doesn’t know how.

It’s almost like a song. . .

Splash! A seagull dives and captures his breakfast. . . breaks up the glossy water with a fish that is too big to handle. He tries, flutters and digs, the fish fighting a losing war. The crow leaves, looking for a food source he can obtain.

Yes, It’s almost like a song. . .

Knowing that in another hour a breeze will more ripples in the water and cause the bright sun to dance across them to welcome another day on the lake.

Almost like the song!

Watching the Martins

Free Room and Board in The Purple Martin House

Purple Martin HouseOur neighbour has a Purple Martin house which he cleans every year and reinstalls each year with the high expectation of full occupancy.  Some years the house has been fully occupied within hours of its installation.

Last year, while the hatchlings were too young to fly, a smart raccoon somehow scaled the pole and raided the nest.  Then, the starlings came and attached what was left.  It was sad.  Baby bird parts scattered all over the lawns.  The adults that escaped the massacre left mid season and did not return.

This year in mid April the house went up, but there was no activity.  About a week later I spotted two sub-adults checking it out.  They were flitting in and out and around, the flitted away and did not return.

I watched and watched, the starlings watched along with me, to no avail.  Today, I thought I heard the Martin twitter, and sure enough, there they were, this time there was one standing on guard and one in the house.  I have been watching for 3 hours off and on and they are still there.  This is a good sign.  I will keep watch.

My Mom

May 10th, 2009 by admin

A mother lives to love
Gives you the legs to walk
Helps you grow wings to fly like a dove

Mothers all sing a song
A song that echoes through the hallways of life
Into the sea of motherly care flows her melody of no wrong

Mom gives her sole to you from the first breath you take
She wants nothing in return accept to know you have flown away from the nest
Her gentle touch, inspiration of happiness and kind regard will never break

The love of your mother
Shows you your place with a reason for being
She shows you how to love another

Mom, it is you that has shown me who I am
Your warm smile and caring hands give me all the strength I need
I love you mom and thank you for making me a man.

Your Son,

Robert Kennedy

What makes a Great Logo

April 15th, 2008 by admin

Why a Great Logo is Important

The finest logos are often more memorable than the words we speak. Your logo is an extension of your brand. The best logos are memory hooks about a business or company that are all hung in one closet together- your logo. If you allow a professional to design your logo they will form the graphic handshake that you make in your viewers minds. The greatest logos are always remembered due to the high impact value they carry. Prepared properly it will stand out against all the other image icons people see in a given day.

Example How to Make Great Bakery Logos

You can get great bakery logo ideas from cake images or cute flowers that usually go along with it.

Take a look at your Bakery’s beautiful and delicious gift items and try to envision all those cookies, chocolate-dipped treats, cakes and cupcakes a designer that customizes and designs logos could use. Many of the products sold in a bakery are great for holiday and corporate gifting ideas to businesses. If that is your target, the logo designer should be aware of that. If there are chains and trendy eateries it is also part of what a graphic artist needs to be aware of in order to highly personalize your icon.

How Important it is to Have a Powerful Logo

February 27th, 2008 by Pariah

The Importance Of A Strong Logo

Size does matter. Even if you don’t have the size of your company to show for it.

Being a small company doesn’t mean that you should settle for what you can afford with very limited budget. Or that you should work on what you have and make it work to your advantage, such as your agility and innovative qualities.

To successfully create a brand that will work not only for you but most importantly for your target audience, it takes a big effort on your part. Let’s face it, big companies are successful marketers because they offer an image that makes it easy for customers and clients to rely on them. Often, big companies project an image of stability and strength that clients and prospects believe that they could trust these companies to deliver on their word.

One of the things that clients look for when they see a company’s image is whether they would feel comfortable relinquishing the responsibility of fulfilling their needs. Therefore, if your print ads such as your marketing brochures don’t look like they’re strong enough to handle the responsibility, you’ll definitely lose your leads to your competitors.

How to Make Images on Your Website

November 5th, 2007 by admin

Dealing with Images on your Website

The option Exact uses exactly the same colors in the palette as those that appear in the images on your website. System Windows and System Macintosh use their respective default 8-bit palette that many times may not have any relation with the image on your website being processed. The process of 8-bit palette is mostly used by web browsers when processing web images. The Adaptive palette is the most effective since it selects the most frequently used color in the picture and then uses it in the palette. A Custom palette allows the user to create a palette. Using this a user can convert multiple images on your web site using the same custom palette. It is available to the user only after the user has converted the image using Adaptive or Custom palette.

The reduction in their image file size can be of great help in making a graphic intensive web page. You can try these on your pictures to see the size difference. Remember that while reducing the file size of an image, try not to compromise with the image quality.

Make a Logo Design Company Image

October 16th, 2007 by admin

Logo designs are symbols that represent architecture design graphics for your idea. They are not limited to just brands, companies or products. A design company can make the best logo designs, so good they can go down in history even after a corporation no longer exists. Here’s an example of icon designs that are the most popular, well known on our planet.

When a design company plots out graphic designs they have conceptualized colors, pattern construction of the logo, white (clear) space architecture of design graphics are all parts of the designer’s emblem creation process. If you want a designing symbol that grows and lasts it is absolutely essential to make a solid connection with your favorite creative designer and forming a relaxed and productive business arrangement that allows for a telecommunication from client to designer to occur.

Select your Favorite

Selecting the right design company to make your logo is the first step in constructing a uniform identity system. So I feel that one must not rush the acceptance process. Sometimes stepping out for a breath of fresh air or a coffee is all it takes. In a similar way graphic designs that are well planned and executed by a creative designer may not translate quickly. When this happens it is sometimes a tell tail sign that the cycle of graphic interpretation is missing something and needs tweaking or rework. There are many ways to address this issue when it occurs and no two solutions will be exactly the same. However, there are some rules used when coming up with design ideas, though (at least I use certain rules).

Logo Design with Embossing and Earthtones

September 18th, 2007 by admin

Making a Logo that Includes Embossing

Today I had a little too much time on my hands and started experimenting with some unique logo design concepts. I start by surfing the internet for unique logo effects, logo ideas and embossed printing. I Found a blog that looks like it’s just getting started but it got me thinking about taking line art elements of a logo and embossing them in conjunction with lithography. If you think about the possibilities it’s endless. So with my time today I started to play with a natural , cleaned edged logotype placed on a custom premium paper “stack aspire-Silver-ore”.

How To Operate An Effective Direct Mail Campaign

September 6th, 2007 by GenJaneu

Direct mail is a marketing method that has been in effect for quite some time. But it works to varying degrees of effectiveness because few people know how to operate an effective direct mail campaign. The first thing to do is to consider your audience and then direct your mailing only to those who fit your audience. You want concentrate on honest prospects that are most likely to buy your product or service. Carefully decide whom your product or service will most appeal to. Think of your audience as one person. Create a profile of that person. Then develop a plan to reach that person and persuade him or her to purchase your product or service.

Items that make an effective direct mail campaign

Effective mail marketing campaigns include three very specific items: an envelope people want to open, a message that focuses on the recipient and a clear call to action.

Offset Printing Your Posters

August 21st, 2007 by orngecrush

The next time you plan your poster printing project, you need to make a decision on what kind of printing method you are going to use. In addition to the graphic designers, writers, poster printing design, and layout, you also have to plan what is the most appropriate printing technique for your budget.

So what will it be- offset printing or digital printing? Let’s talk about offset printing.

Offset poster printing, according to Wikipedia, is the most widely used printing method of today. This type of poster printing technique uses a plate then a rubber blanket to transfer your inked image to the printing surface, hence, the word “offset”. Offset poster printing is often used along with the lithographic process (which is another story altogether). This process involves a “flat image carrier” wherein the ink used for the image is taken from the ink rollers. The non-printing area, on the other hand, attracts a film of water, keeping it free from ink.
